Board and batten shutters were originally created as window coverings for modest early American homes and barns before glass was an option. Many cottages that the farmers lived in had matching shutters. Home designers and decorators then realized that putting board and batten shutters on a home would give the home a more “rural/cottage” feel. This began to catch on in many areas due to a shift in architectural style.  Board and batten shutters have become one of the most contemporary exterior decorative home accents for both restoration projects as well as new homes that are seeking for a more rural/cottage look.

Board & Batten Shutters have 3/4” boards and battens Wood shutters have 1/2” space between boards and all the boards have square edges Closed style available at no extra charge – Boards have beveled edges Engineered shutters are 1 piece closed style – “V”-grooves simulate boards Specify # of boards in each shutter Battens are 1” smaller (1/2” each side) than width of shutter Batten size – 1×4 or 1×6 (nominal) – Similar to board width “Z” style shutters have square edge battens – chamfered edge battens on all others Shutters are designed for decorative use
